George Ireland

George Ireland is studying a masters degree in piano accompaniment at the Royal College of Music under Simon Lepper and Roger Vignoles. His studies are generously supported by the Pimlott Foundation as well as the RCM’s Kendall Taylor Award, and the Hervey Benham Charitable Trust.

Originally from Harwich, George began to play the piano from scratch, self taught, at the age of fourteen, achieving grade five with distinction in two years and grade eight with distinction two years later. Soon after he was giving concerts throughout East Anglia. Notably before studying as an undergraduate at the University of Birmingham he performed Schubert’s Fantasia in F Minor and Mozart’s Sonata for Two Pianos for the Pimlott Foundation with Trevor Cordwell.

In 2013 he won the Tendring Rotary Club Young Musician Competition and as a result gave his Concerto debut with the Clacton Concert Orchestra, performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto K.595. He performed Mozart’s Concerto K.503 with the St Botolph’s Music Society Orchestra in 2014 to great acclaim, returning in 2018 with K.466. In 2016 he won the University of Birmingham Concerto Competition, performing Grieg’s Piano Concerto with the University Symphony Orchestra.

George’s career as an accompanist has presented recital opportunities throughout the country; he has performed at the German Embassy in London, Peterborough Cathedral, St George’s Bristol, St Luke’s Brighton and St Leonard’s Bledington as part of the Bledington Music Festival, these last three being with David Jones with whom he performs today. With mezzo-soprano Laura Hocking he has been selected for the Leeds Lieder young artists’ programme taking place in April including masterclasses with Ann Murray and Amanda Roocroft.

He has also enjoyed Répétiteur positions with British Youth Opera, Birmingham Opera Company and University of Birmingham Summer Festival Opera, and works regularly as a choral accompanist. Having worked with The CBSO Chorus and Youth Chorus, The University of Birmingham Chorus, Pegasus and Vox Cordis, George has been the chorus master of Opera Integra since September 2018 and accompanist of the East London Chorus since September 2017.

Update:
I am very pleased indeed to have been accepted as a Leeds Lieder Young Artist alongside fellow college student, Mezzo-Soprano Laura Hocking and we will attend the course at the end of this month. We will enjoy masterclasses with Ann Murray and Amanda Roocroft, as well as participation in the various events taking place throughout the week. On the 18th May I will be competing in the Semi-Final of the Somerset Song Prize with Soprano Rebekah Smith, after a successful first-round audition last weekend. This is very exciting as there is a separate pianists prize up for grabs!

At 4pm on May 26th I will be returning to St Barnabus’ in Walthamstow to give a recital “Musicians Without Borders” with the most wonderful Gillian Keith and Tom Randle, and Cellist Franitšek Brikcius featuring pieces & songs by Borodin, Liszt, Ives, and I’ll even play a little solo! I have attached the poster, and would be delighted if you felt you could attend or know anybody local!
