Samuel Hollis

Samuel is a British bassist, composer and teacher currently based in London + East Anglia.
As a Jazz Studies alumnus to California Institute of The Arts and Creative Music Technology graduate of the UK’s #1 Arts University, [First-Class Hons, Falmouth University 2017] Samuel has studied with world-renowned bassists Alphonso Johnson & Darek Oleszkiewicz. He released a debut album in April 2019; a collection of improvised duets titled | I S H A L T A .

Whilst specialising in improvised music, Samuel has worked alongside artists including Lily Lyons, Max Stanton, Saulius Jegelevičius, Sarah McQuaid, Michael Chapman, Stephen Duffy and award-winning film-writer and director Douglas Arrowsmith; with experience ranging from session work to the pits of Quadrophenia, Grease and Hello Dolly!

In Spring 2018 Samuel was composer in residence at The Pimlott Foundation and began working with Fleece Jazz as a live sound engineer.

A competent and enthused communicator, Samuel has experience teaching both the technical aspects of his craft and the fundamentals of musicianship; running skills sessions covering approaches and concepts in improvisation, composition, sight-reading, rhythm skills, transcription, ear-training and sound recording.

As a qualified studio engineer and musician Samuel provides theoretical + instrumental tuition alongside professional recording, mixing, engineering and stringed instrument maintenance + repair as a former student of Michigan based Master Luthier, Bryan Galloup.
