Anup Kumar Biswas came from a poor family and was sent to an orphanage run by the Oxford Mission in Calcutta. There, his innate musical ability was recognised by an elderly priest, Fr Theodore Mathieson, who taught him to play the cello. By the time he was 15 he had been awarded scholarships at both the Royal Academy and the Royal School of Music and so came here to study when Father Mathieson retired to London. Since then he has built a successful international career during which he has tirelessly raised money for the building and maintainance of the Mathieson Music School which he established in memory of Fr Mathieson in 1994. The Mathieson Trust also provides for the care and education of the pupils. |
